Carcass characteristics and meat evaluation of Nelore cattle subjected to different antioxidant treatments R. Bras. Zootec.
Carmo,Thiago de Jesus do; Peripolli,Vanessa; Costa Jr,João Batista Gonçalves; Tanure,Candice Bergmann; Fioravanti,Maria Clorinda Soares; Restle,João; Kindlein,Liris; McManus,Concepta.
ABSTRACT Forty Nelore cattle were used to evaluate the effects of supplementation with different antioxidants on carcass characteristics and meat quality of feedlot cattle. Animals were fed Brachiaria brizantha hay and subjected to five treatments (control and four antioxidants: zinc, selenium, vitamin E, and selenium + vitamin E). After a 105-day feeding period, cattle were slaughtered. Tissue composition, as well as carcass proximate composition, color, tenderness, pH, and fatty acid profile were evaluated. Analysis of variance was carried out and means compared by Tukey test at 0.05 probability. The group fed selenium showed the lowest muscle amount (66.61 g/100 g) compared with the other antioxidants evaluated. There was no difference among treatments...

Inclusion of Yucca schidigera extract and zeolite in the diet and its relationship to the apparent digestibility of nutrients and urinary pH in adult dogs Ciência Rural
Santos,João Paulo Fernandes; Saad,Flavia Maria de Oliveira Borges; Ogoshi,Rosana Claudio Silva; Reis,Jéssica Santana dos; Ferreira,Livia Geraldi; Pires,Carolina Padovani; França,Janine; Ebina,Fernanda Sayuri; Aquino,Adriana Augusto; Brunetto,Márcio Antonio.
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate the inclusion of Yucca schidigera extract and zeolite (Clinoptilolite) added to the diets for dogs and its effect on apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) of diet components (dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, acid hydrolyzed fat, and energy) and urinary pH. Twenty-one adult Beagles, males and females, body weight mean of 12.5±1.5kg and four and a half years old, distributed in a completely randomized design with seven replicates per treatment within three experimental treatments: control (no addition of Yucca schidigera and zeolite), Yucca schidigera (375ppm) and zeolite (1%), administered in the encapsulated form of the supplement. The ADC of diet components and urinary pH were not affected by the...

Mururé (Brosimum acutifolium Huber) in the treatment of syphilis in colonial Amazonia: historical data to the actual contribution to treatment Acta Botanica
Vieira,Erika Fernanda de Matos; Lucas,Flávia Cristina Araújo; Campos,Maria da Graça Ribeiro; Germano,Carolina Mesquita.
ABSTRACT Historical ethnobotanical studies of medicinal plants reveal important information about traditional practices of human groups and influence current understanding of the use of plants. The present article describes the ethnopharmacology of mururé (Brosimum acutifolium) since the XVIII century for the treatment of syphilis and correlates past and present therapeutic use. This information contributes to the appreciation of historical records in the contemporary use of natural products. The analysis of documental records is important for comparing information available overtime about the medicinal use and application of specific species. The present research was based on the analysis of a Jesuit work and other complementary documents. The medicinal...

Starfish, Asterias amurensis and Asterina pectinifera, as Potential Sources of Th1 Immunity-Stimulating Adjuvants OAK
KAWASE, Osamu; GOO, Youn-Kyoung; JUJO, Hayato; NISHIKAWA, Yoshifumi; XUAN, Xuenan; 西川, 義文; 玄, 学南.
Saponin is the generic name of steroid or triterpene glycosides, and the capacities of some saponins to stimulate both Th1 immune response and production of cytotoxic T cells are useful as vaccine components against intracellular pathogens. Because saponins have been found commonly in starfish, we assessed the potential of starfish, Asterias amurensis and Asterina pectinifera, as adjuvant sources. Crude starfish saponins had hemolytic activities (EC50=10 to 100 μg/ml) and thin layer chromatography indicated heterogeneity of their constituents. When starfish saponis were subcutaneously injected into mice with ovalbumin (OVA), OVA-specific IgG, especially IgG2a instead of IgG1 was produced in mouse blood, suggesting starfish saponins stimulated Th1 type...

The effect of ensiling and haymaking on the concentrations of steroidal saponin in two Brachiaria grass species Ciência Rural
Lima,Flavia Gontijo de; Lee,Stephen Thomas; Pfister,James Alan; Miyagi,Eliane Sayuri; Costa,Gustavo Lage; Silva,Roberta Dias da; Fioravanti,Maria Clorinda Soares.
Brachiaria (signalgrass) is now the most widely used tropical grass genus in Central and South America. However, Brachiaria spp. can cause hepatogenous photosensitization in livestock. Steroidal saponins, specifically protodioscin, present in Brachiaria spp. may be responsible for liver injury and subsequent photosensitization. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of ensiling Brachiaria decumbens and Brachiaria brizantha or making hay from Brachiaria decumbens on the concentrations of steroidal saponin in these grasses. Brachiaria grass had no detectable levels of the saponin protodioscin after 24 days of ensiling. In addition, in Brachiaria decumbens, the concentration of the protodioscin decreased 48% over the first three days after...
